Cold Watt Inc. has selected Silicon Laboratories Inc.’s C8051F30x microcontroller for use in Cold Watt’s power-conversion platforms. The highly integrated, mixed-signal MCU combines a 25-MIPS 8051 CPU, flash memory, and precision analog functions in a 3 mm x 3 mm quad flat no-lead package. It thus eliminates the need for several external components, such as crystal oscillators and comparators. Cold Watt’s modular digital power-conversion platforms deliver up to 91% power-conversion efficiency with power levels ranging from 650W to 1,200W.

"Silicon Laboratories’ MCUs offer a lot of functionality in a very small size to enable us to develop highly efficient power conversion platforms," said Allen Rozman, vice president of engineering at Cold Watt. "By implementing the easy-to-use C8051F30x, we were also able to speed our time to market."

PSoC devices employ a highly configurable SoC architecture for embedded control design. They offer a flash-based equivalent of a field-programmable ASIC without lead-time or NRE penalties. The devices integrate configurable analog and digital circuits, controlled by an on-chip microcontroller.
