Don’t count out the incandescent light bulb just yet. While compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) are the rage for saving energy, and thus reducing greenhouse gases, GE Consumer & Industrial’s Lighting Div. says it’s developing high-efficiency incandescent (HEI) lamps that within a few years will hit 30 lumens/W, double that of today’s 40W to 100W incandescent bulbs. Ultimately, GE expects a four-fold increase in efficiency, comparable to CFLs. The HEI lamps incorporate innovative materials being developed in partnership with GE’s Lighting Div. and GE’s Global Research Center. If all current incandescent bulbs were replaced with the new technology, GE estimates CO2 emissions could be reduced by 40 million tons in the U.S. and up to 50 million tons in the EU.

According to Kevin Nolan, vice president of technology for GE Consumer & Industrial, "In addition to offering significant energy savings comparable to CFLs, the 21st Century version of Edison’s bulb provides all the desirable benefits, including light quality and instant-on convenience that incandescent lamps currently provide at a price that will be less than CFLs."

RFID TAG SYSTEM PRINTS DIRECTLY ONTO PACKAGES

www.parelec.com www.TAGSYSrfid.com

A direct-on-packaging RFID tag system has been developed by Parelec Inc. in partnership with TAGSYS, USA. The commercially feasible RFID solution allows customers to print the tag onto corrugated packaging using Parelec’s Parmod VLT ink and TAGSYS’ Adaptive Kernal UHF technology. The patented Parmod VLT ink uses metal particles, which are placed in a reactive organic medium and vaporize during the heating process. The ink can print thick, narrow circuit lines using efficiency single-station printing. The result is a faster, lower cost process with more highly conductive circuits, according to Parelec. The newly developed direct-printing technology will allow customers to optimize the fit and performance of the RFID tag to each unique product package while saving production time and cost. Parelec said that a full-scale implementation of the new technology at a customer site will begin later this year.

"This program is a giant step," noted Elie Simon, president and CEO of TAGSYS. "With our Adaptive Kernal technology and in collaboration with Parelec, we have built a solution that is both reliable and affordable for customers." PARELEC INC. Rocky Hill, NJ. (609) 279-0072
