The latest generation of Motorola wireless phones incorporates
TriQuint Semiconductor’s rf PA-Duplexer module, which operates across multiple frequencies supporting CDMA, WCDMA, and
HEDGE (HSDPA plus EDGE) designs. The phones, available in the U.S., Europe, and Asia, include the KRZR K1m (see photo),
SLVR L7c, Racer ic502, M702iG, M702iS, and RAZR V3MAXX.
The modules occupy 50% less space than discrete components delivering the same transmit chain functions. The devices’ high level of integration and efficiency increase performance, extending talk-time while reducing overall materials costs. Typical content includes multiple die-level devices using TriQuint’s GaAs processes for the power amplifier and matching circuitry, as well as surface acoustic wave technology for filtering and duplexing.
Shipment of the new modules extends the scope of the relationship the two companies have had for more than five years. "These modules are a key element of our ‘Global Handset Strategy’ to provide integrated solutions targeted to specific regional needs," said Tim Dunn, TriQuint’s vice president for handsets. "We are excited that Motorola has selected our Tritium PA-Duplexer Module family for its new generation of innovative phones designs."
CSR’S 802.11B/G CHIP CHOSEN FOR VoWiFi PHONES
Taiwan-based communications equipment manufacturer Accton has selected CSR’s one-chip WiFi (802.11b/g) solution, UniFi, for its new Voice over WiFi phones. UniFi comes in a chip-scale package with a 6 mm x 6 mm footprint. Accton designed its VM8168C phones around UniVox, CSR’s VoIP phone reference design. UniVox employs WiFi Multimedia Power mode, which when used with a compatible access point will provide up to 20 hours of talk time and 400 hours of standby time. The UniVox design includes CSR’s Multimedia Applications Processor, which combines a low-power RISC-based applications processor with a high-performance DSP. It also incorporates audio CODECs and echo cancellation, as well as intelligent power management.
"As one of the leading providers for WiFi phones, we see a trend for future handsets to be equipped with Bluetooth capability," said Ken Lu, president of Accton Technology. "CSR's UniFi WiFi silicon and software has enabled us to produce Vo WiFi handsets that offer the highest quality and performance, but at a cost that means our handsets can be attractive to a wide audience."
