Archived Webcasts Offer an Education in High-Speed Probing and Digital Modulation
A pair of recent webcasts produced by Agilent Technologies are now archived for viewing on demand.
• Quality Probing Techniques for Measuring Multi-Gigabit Data Rates
At low frequencies, the type and quality of the probes used were not very critical. That was then; this is now. Today’s very fast signals cannot be measured accurately unless engineers doing the troubleshooting pay close attention to probing techniques. Designers must consider all the characteristics of a probe—input impedance, bandwidth, flatness, connectivity, ergonomics, etc.—when looking for the right probe to use and deciding how best to use it. This webcast presents some of the common problems associated with high-speed active probing and demonstrates some techniques for solving these problems. Issues discussed include physical connection resonances, making the physical connection without compromising bandwidth, and flexibility in making connections.

• Digital Modulation and Troubleshooting Basics
A number of digital modulation techniques are available to designers. This webcast offers a fast way to gain not only insight but also real-world experience with these techniques. The session begins with a brief overview of digital modulation techniques and a summary of basic modulation types. It covers the most common measurements and display types and describes an effective analysis and troubleshooting sequence, taught through examples of specific impairments. More complex modulation techniques, such as OFDM, are also introduced. Attendees can even download software with a free, non-expiring demo license that lets them see pre-recorded modulation signals and make actual measurements. The PC-based software (whether independent or analyzer-hosted) that now dominates the design and evaluation of new systems, provides attendees an opportunity to use, as a learning aid, a tool that is already widely used by engineers in this marketplace.
